They Will Be Vigilant
“I apprehend no danger to our country from a foreign foe. … Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government—from their carelessness and negligence—I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants, and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct.—that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men, and become the instruments of their own undoing. Make them intelligent, and they will be vigilant—give them the means of detecting the wrong, and they will apply the remedy.”
Daniel Webster (1782-1852) Author, Lawyer and Patriot
Tomorrow night, Wednesday, July 13th, please attend the Lake Park Special Call Meeting at 7:00 p.m. Be vigilant, be curious. Ask questions if you dare, but first and foremost, show up. If you cannot attend but can watch on channel 18, we hope you will, but make no mistake, accountability infers eye contact, interaction and it requires engagement. It is not a spectator sport. Our leaders need to be aware of and made to bear the presence of we, the town guardians.
Tomorrow night our newly elected Mayor and commissioner will swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. (I do hope they have read it.) Let’s pledge ourselves that we also know and uphold it (for how can we hold them to a standard to which we are unaware). It is “the means of detecting wrong.”
Then, by all means, let’s make them accountable to both it and to us. I hope to see you there!
